Two honoured in LifeKeepers awards for workplace mahi

Mates of Tairāwhiti trainer Matt Oakley and facilitator Ivan Maurirere have been recognised as LifeKeepers C.A.R.E. Heroes for 2023.

Nominated by Hineiti (Nate) Monika, Tairāwhiti Suicide Prevention Coordinator - "Matt and Ivan support people who are based in the Tairāwhiti workforce.  Their roles vary from facilitators to web page creators, to supporters of other people's kaupapa, to sharing life experience, to being forward thinkers, to just having decent and sometimes difficult conversations with whānau about life".

It is a momentous occasion to share the collective efforts of many, bringing us now to over 8,000 certified LifeKeepers across Aotearoa New Zealand, trained in suicide prevention. This means that these incredible individuals are nestled amongst our communities supporting whānau in distress, to prevent suicide.

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things to save lives and prevent suicides in their communities will be recognised today at the national LifeKeepers Awards, with an opening speech by Director of the Suicide Prevention Office Carla na Nagara.

Earlier this month the LifeKeepers team brought their new e-learning programme to the Counties Manukau Steelers’ for their personal development day.

This August twelve nominees from across Aotearoa were recognised in Christchurch for their contributions to preventing suicide in their communities - ordinary people doing extraordinary things to create communities of C.A.R.E.
